Anniversary: James Dean, Actor

It's been 63 years (September 30, 1955) since the actor, James Dean, passed away in a car crash. His iconic red jacket which he wore in Rebel Without a Cause (pictured below) was up for auction earlier this year, but it did not meet the reserve price.

International Coffee Day 2018

Aging has its benefits --- for people and for coffee, as studies continue to reveal.  In the world of coffee aficionados, the best flavor comes from beans that have been "monsooned", or stored in an open-air warehouse where the beans are exposed to the tropical elements for approximately 16 weeks.  The added moisture and wind result in a low-acid, full-body brew.  The process mimics shipping methods of the 1600s, when coffee from India travelled to Europe aboard sailing vessels.  The journey took up to six months, with the beans soaking up the moist air.  As shipping methods became faster, coffee got a sharper taste.

Maybe all that natural aging has increased its health benefits too.  Recent medical research indicates that drinking coffee lowers a person's chances of getting colon cancer, gallstones, cirrhosis of the liver, Parkinson's disease, and type 2 diabetes.  Plus, coffee helps control asthma and alleviates headaches.

As it turns out, Americans drink so much coffee that coffee is the number one source of antioxidants in their diet.  Take that, fruits and vegetables.

Floor Renovation: Chevron or Herringbone-pattern Entryway

I wanted traditional & timeless -- an entryway that says "WELCOME!"  Thus, a herringbone tile pattern embedded in the middle of our landing was born. We didn't use slate (remains a good choice) but went for brick-like in porcelain instead.

WHO & Bacon

Party-poopers!  Crispy, delicious bacon is what I reach for first during breakfast (or any meals) here at home, or at an all-you-can-eat Buffet.

World Health Organization Officially Declares Bacon is as Harmful as Cigarettes ...

This was based off of a decision made by the World Health Organization, to brand processed meats as “carcinogenic to humans,” deciding to list them in the ranks of other notoriously carcinogenic substances such as asbestos, arsenic, cigarettes, and alcohol.
Truthfully, the story is simplistic and it’s all based around a fallacy: an appeal to authority, the authority of the WHO.
Often, the WHO, CDC, and other government organizations have the ability to cause a media stir just based on what they say, not even necessarily what they report.
Continuing, the World Health Organization officially classified processed meats as carcinogenic in October 2015.

Run for your Life!

“Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. James 4:14 (KJV)

How Many Dogs Does it Take to Change a Lightbulb?

It's Friday's Laugh-of-the-Day. Funny that neither my Shih Tzu pup nor my smart Maltichon dog made it on the "news" clipping, but my intelligent Collie-mix did! (Son and DIL's Australian Shepherd made it too, lol).

Mirrors That are Good Enough to Hang as Art

Who does not love a pretty mirror?!!  Why not let them double as fine art too?  Some can cost an arm and a leg (mine were quite affordable).  Remember, there is always an option B, or an option C if you're watching your budget.

Part 2: A Long-lasting Leopard Gecko Daytime Bulb

The bulb was purchased on July 16th and lasted till approximately September 7th. Total: 53 days/636 hours (12-hour days).  Compare that number to the  3500 hours touted on GRREAT CHOICE's box.

(On a previous post I had wanted to know how long our Gecko's new daytime heat/lamp would last.  We'd seem to replace them too often).

Grreat Choice's Terrarium Light clearly Did Not Last!!  Thus, I do not recommend the product.  A thumbs-down from all of us, including Sushi Gecko.

Petsmart was willing to let us exchange the busted bulb for a new bulb. Thank God we saved our receipt.  We shall see if the bulb is any better.  Even kitty is skeptical. Stay tuned.

Thankful for Teeny-tiny Apartment

Tiny (200 s.f) St. Louis apartment with kitchen-bathroom combo makes waves
by Paulina Dedaj, Fox News

A listing for a tiny St. Louis apartment has gone viral because of its unique layout in which the kitchen and bathroom are the same place.
The 200-square-foot two-room apartment in St. Louis’ popular Central West End gained notoriety after an ad with a photo was posted showing a kitchen sink and a bathtub separated only by a toilet.
Harold Karabell of S.F. Shannon Real Estate Management said that the quaint apartment was rented out for $525-per-month and the new tenant loves it.

Karabell told the St. Louis Dispatch  that despite its unusual setup, the place is “a legitimate apartment” that’s “passed all city inspections.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
I am thankful to God for providing a nice apartment for our daughter. Her apartment has 3 bedrooms and takes up the entire floor of a private home.  It is approximately 6+ times bigger in size than the above apartment. The rent per month is almost 4x more (divided among the 3 Renters).  The kitchen and bathroom are adequately sized, separate, with a hallway between the two rooms, yay.
