Resolution #2 for Year 2021

Saw this post on IG  and thought, Yes, #2 is do-able!

Whoa: This Is What Happens to Your Body When You Drink Enough Water - Kristin Limoges, Domino Magazine

Inadequate hydration can cause extreme fatigue, poor memory, dizziness, constipation, and even mood shifts. But the great news is that water can have immediate benefits, even within 10 minutes or less. “That charge increases the cells’ functional efficiency, leading to better energy, clearer thinking, and less brain fog,” says Dr. Cohen. In addition, you can also feel an improvement in muscle cramps and headache relief.

After One Week

Within seven days of being properly hydrated, you’ll have fewer aches and pains and bowel movements will become more regulated and frequent.

Also, your skin clarity will improve. “A body that has been suboptimally hydrated will, over time, shunt water toward essential organs like your heart and away from nonessential tissue like your skin and muscles,” says Dr. Charles Passler, a celebrity nutritionist and founder of Pure Change Detox. “This can lead to wrinkled or drooping skin, as well as reduced muscle strength.”

After One Month

One month into drinking your daily recommended ounces of water, and you’ll be hitting your stride. You can expect clearer, less bloated skin, plus continuous benefits in mental clarity, muscle strength, and stamina, says Dr. Passler.

After Six Months

“Having our cells properly hydrated creates homeostasis in the body and flushes out toxins,” says Dr. Passler. Beyond just looking and feeling great, proper hydration is necessary for the proper functioning of every single organ and tissue in your body. “The long-term benefits of avoiding dehydration play an important role in reducing the risk of diseases and disorders, like urinary tract infections, hypertension, coronary heart disease, glaucoma, and gallstone disease,” says Dr. Passler.

Healthy Food Buying During Covid-19

The 8 Healthy Frozen Foods Nutritionists Always Buy

They're convenient too. - by K Limoges, Domino Magazine

pc: EDGAR CASTREJON
When you think of nutrient-rich meals, you might envision vibrant green juices or colorful salads, but what about frozen foods? The frozen aisle is often seen as a place to find convenient meals rather than nutritious ones: think ice creams, pizza pockets, and frozen TV dinners.
Yet many nutritionists say that a ton of healthy, protein-rich, and balanced meals can be found in that handy frozen section, but you just have to know what to look for. We asked three nutritionists to pick their go-to items, from single items like edamame to full-on meals like veggie burgers, and explain how they cook with them at home. Get ready to grab a cart because we’re going grocery shopping.

Whole Grains

You’re probably buying grains in the dry goods aisle, but NYC-based registered dietitian and culinary nutritionist Jackie Topol says to give the frozen section a try. “I always have frozen whole grains, like brown rice or quinoa, on hand to throw together a quick side dish with fresh or frozen vegetables,” she says. It’s a huge timesaver, as frozen precooked grains don’t need to be made from scratch like the dried counterparts do. You can simply add your grain to a saute to heat up and thaw.

Cauliflower

Frozen cauliflower is a huge time and money saver. It never goes bad and is precooked, so it can be quickly used in any type of dish. Try mixing things up with cauliflower by giving your saute a tasty Asian-inspired flare. Grab some coconut aminos, garlic, and red chili flakes, and then crack an egg on top of your cauliflower dish, as registered dietitian Amy Shapiro does. Or make a bowl of quick fried rice with cauliflower rice and add in tamari, sesame oil, and veggies.
Shockingly, cauliflower is also incredible in smoothies—yes, smoothies. “It adds tons of nutrition without added sugar and it also adds some creaminess,” says Shapiro.

Green Vegetables

Add some greens to smoothies and frittatas in the form of spinach and kale, but also grab some more protein-rich items, like frozen peas and edamame. Frozen peas can be added to grain-based dishes or in a soup for protein, says Topol. And edamame is a handy, protein-rich snack that can be steamed and ready in just a few minutes. Topol suggests using the ones in the shell for snacking and the shelled version to add to meals. Peas are also almost always precooked, so they made meal prep a breeze.

Fruit

The one fruit that’s most likely never in your freezer comes highly recommended by registered dietitian Carlene Thomas. “Frozen cranberries are America’s original superfruit,” she says. Cranberries have unique polyphenols that are not only healthy, but they also add a unique tang to any type of dish, from smoothies to sauces to roasted vegetables.
One frustrating thing when buying fresh foods is the potential for waste. But with a freezer, nothing has to ever go to unused, including overripe bananas. Peel and half them, and then put them in a freezer-safe container to bake later or to add to smoothies.

Ginger

You might be overlooking this flavor-packed root, but not anymore, says Topol. You usually only need a tablespoon or two at a time for most recipes, so frozen ginger is handy to have for that random recipe that asks for it. You can also make a super tasty tea out of fresh ginger that’s frozen, thawing when needed, and letting it steep for an hour-plus for extra potency.

Veggie Burger

Veggie burgers are often passed over, but nutritionists still swear by them for a quick, convenient meal. “I’ll add some salad and avocado, et voila, your meal is made,” says Topol. Try Hilary’s, Sunshine Burger, or Dr. Praegers.

Seafood

“Frozen wild salmon is often cheaper per pound than fresh, so I keep my fridge stocked with individual portions so a quick meal is only minutes away,” says Topol. Don’t discount frozen shrimp, either, which can be defrosted and cooked in under 10 minutes. “Add some pesto and sauté the shrimp with cauliflower rice, and dinner is done,” says Shapiro.

Smoothies

If you love smoothies but want a shortcut, grab the prepacked smoothie kits that most grocery stores offer. They feature items like kale, mixed berries, and other fruits, and all you have to do is add water or milk and you’ll be all set.
Shapiro also loves Daily Harvest (she’s the registered dietitian for the brand), which offers a variety of healthy smoothies. The veggies and fruits are organic and precut, so all you need to do is throw it in the mixer with milk and blend.

Dessert

The frozen aisle is maybe most associated with its sweet offerings. But enjoying a frozen treat doesn’t have to be unhealthy. Frozen, chocolate-dipped bananas are a worthy treat, as are coconut-based ice creams. Shapiro also loves Good Pops Freezer Pops, which come in old-school push-up containers but are low in sugar and calories.
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

LIST: Uses and Information for Many Herbs

pc: wikipedia
Useful!  I found a web site with an alphabetical list of over 250 H E R B S.

When you click on the link for any of the herbs, it takes you to a dedicated page for that herb - and it is chock-full of information.

Beware, they may have a section on the  "magickal" uses for a herb.  I am definitely not promoting that section at all. I am most interested in an herb's (proven) health benefits.

Lavandula stoechas, the Spanish lavender or topped lavender (U.S.)

Praise the Lord from the earth, ye dragons, and all deeps:
Fire, and hail; snow, and vapours; stormy wind fulfilling his word:
Mountains, and all hills; fruitful trees, and all cedars:
Beasts, and all cattle; creeping things, and flying fowl:
Kings of the earth, and all people; princes, and all judges of the earth:
Both young men, and maidens; old men, and children:
 Let them praise the name of the Lord: for his name alone is excellent;
his glory is above the earth and heaven. (Psalm 148)

FitBit: Lose Weight in 5 Steps

sole comparison
Fitbit has been  the biggest influence on my weight lost. I began with keeping tabs on doing 10,000 steps daily via my Fitbit watch. That part was easy as I enjoy walking the dogs around the my neighborhood first thing in the morning on an almost daily basis.  My worn-out boots are proof.

Counting the calories and watching what I eat -- not so fun. I've gotten careless and the pounds have slowly been creeping-up. I need to review thru this article and feel revitalized.

Per the FITBIT blog
My 5 Plan:  The most effective and efficient behaviors we need to incorporate into our lives to lose the most amount of weight in the least amount of time.

Summarized below.

Teen Survey Favorite: Chick-Fil-A Restaurant & Son

It's our AJ's Birthday!

What a blessing this guy has been. Affectionate, likeable, generous, and now happily working for Chick-fil-A as a part-timer.

For the fourth consecutive time, Chick-fil-A came out as teens’ favorite restaurant chain in Piper Jaffrey’s 39th semi-annual “Taking Stock With Teens” survey, which aims to monitor Generation Z’s spending habits and brand loyalties.

According to the findings — which were determined by analyzing self-reported data from 9,500 subjects with an average age of 15.8 — Starbucks, Chipotle, McDonald’s and Dunkin’ followed close behind, rounding out the top five preferred places to spend cash. - Fox News

The Benefits of Drinking Water

Summer will be here before you know it.
Stay hydrated. Always.  Know why?  Here ya go ...

Note:  I will never forget the News from a few years back of Terri Schiavo.  Her husband  let her die "naturally" by removing her feeding tube because she was in a vegetative state.  She pretty much died a slow, horrible death thru thirst and dehydration.  A most cruel act. What a despicable man.  God have mercy on him.

Your Healthy Weight: No-Calorie-Counting Way to Eat Healthier

The No-Calorie-Counting Way to Eat Healthier --  HARLEY PASTERNAK

Say goodbye to fiber-starved juice cleanses, copious amounts of cabbage soup, and lemon-cayenne-pepper concoctions: This is the year you adopt a simple—and sustainable—weight loss eating plan.
As I mentioned in  Lose Weight Without Losing Your Mind, the My 5 plan is based on efficiency—finding out which health practices pack the biggest punch—and the food component of it is no different. What’s that mean? It means you don’t have to count calories (though you can if you have time!), weigh food, splurge on exotic ingredients, or avoid restaurants. No, all you have to do is follow three, easy guidelines:
  1. Eat 5 times a day—three meals and two snacks. This equates to eating approximately every three hours. Eating before you’re ravenous will help you stay in control of what and how much you eat. Studies also show that eating more frequently, compared with the conventional three-meals-a-day approach, can help keep your blood sugar and metabolism steady—both of which are good for weight loss.
  1. Make sure every meal contains the “big three of satiety”: protein (seafood, eggs, chicken), fiber (veggies, fruit, seeds) and healthy fats (olive oil, avocado). Snacks, too, must contain protein and fibrous carbs. Aside from their individual benefits—protein boosts metabolism, fiber aids digestion, and fats support heart health—these three nutrients also help you feel fuller faster and for longer.
  1. Ensure each meal is made up of the following: one portion of protein (fish, eggs, etc…) equal to the mass of one hand; a palmful of either a high-fiber fruit (blackberries, apples), a whole grain (quinoa, oats), or a legume (chickpeas, lentils); at least one thumb-size portion of a healthy fat (avocado, olives, nuts, seeds); and unlimited veggies (broccoli, zucchini, spinach).

Healthy Monday: What Happens When You Stop Eating Sugar

What Happens to Your Body When You Stop Eating Sugar -  KRISTIN LIMOGES, Domino Magazine

After an Hour

PHOTOGRAPHY BY CODY GUILFOYLE
Expect withdrawals, even after a few hours. “Sugar is addictive and activates a dopamine response in the reward center of the brain, like a drug,” says Wolfe. Depending on the amount of sugar you consume daily, you might experience varying drops in blood sugar levels, sweating, shaking, irritable moodiness, hunger, and even depression.
Gottfried suggests fighting through these symptoms by consuming fresh vegetables with fiber, anti-inflammatory protein sources, and healthy fats.

After a Day
The days after you’ve stopped consuming sugar are perhaps the hardest. “You may have withdrawal-like symptoms including headaches and a drop in energy levels,” says Gottfried. You’ll probably even have some strong cravings for something sweet.
But already, your body is beginning to heal itself. “Sugar feeds harmful microorganisms, such as candida and fungus (athlete’s foot), so you may notice an immediate change in these or related conditions,” says Wolfe. Those microorganism suckers are hungry though—they’ll be craving sugar—which will make you sequentially hungry for sugar, but fight the cravings and push through.
After a Week

This is where the magic starts kicking in. Your body will quickly start to repair itself once sugar is out of the way, starting with improvements in insulin levels and inflammatory responses. “Research has shown that within 72 hours, you can repair your insulin receptors,” says Gottfried. As insulin levels begin to stabilize, other hormones (like those involved in fat storage) will return to normal levels. Another noticeable difference? Skin clarity and less puffiness in the face, says Wolfe. Moments of low energy can be perfectly normal still too.

After a Month

“After a month, you’ll realize what sugar has been doing to you, namely: increasing cravings, causing weight gain, yeast infections, amplifying inflammation, etc.,” says Wolfe. You’ll notice a lot of these issues, as well as cravings, beginning to disappear.
You’ll also have stable blood sugar levels, improved mental clarity with zero brain fog, natural weight loss, and improved gut health. “Too much sugar in your diet can cause an overgrowth of bad bacteria in your gut (dysbiosis),” says Gottfried. “A healthy gut reduces inflammation in your body and your overall risk for many health problems.”
After Six Months
Imagine this: “You will be so far away from the habit of eating sugar after six months that you will not only not want it, but you won’t even be able to look at it,” says Wolfe. (Talk about #goals.)
Gottfried also says that when blood sugar levels are stabilized, you’ll find weight stays off, especially that stubborn belly fat. More importantly, you’ll be overall healthier. “Six months without refined sugar will decrease your risk of Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and early aging,” she says.

After a Year

A year without processed sugar will definitely do the body good. Sugar has been linked to so many of our daily, long-term health problems, so reducing its intake will help in both small and large-scale ways.
From a surface level, skin quality and reduction of acne, irritation, and fine lines can be dramatic when sugar is eliminated from your daily diet.
On a more serious note, you will see a reduction in overall risk of preventable diseases, like diabetes, heart attacks, and strokes, and you’ll also increase your quality and length of life. “Longevity genes, like SIRT1, will be turned on and the aging gene, mTOR, turned off—thus increasing your healthspan,” says Gottfried.
