A new study conducted by researchers at the University of Chicago Medicine found a potential link between vitamin D deficiency and contracting the coronavirus.

Researchers looked at 489 UChicago Medicine patients and found those who had a deficiency in vitamin D that went untreated were nearly twice as likely to contract COVID-19 when compared to patients with normal levels of vitamin D.

“Vitamin D is important to the function of the immune system and vitamin D supplements have previously been shown to lower the risk of viral respiratory tract infections,” said David Meltzer, MD, PhD, Chief of Hospital Medicine at UChicago Medicine and lead author of the study. “Our statistical analysis suggests this may be true for the COVID-19 infection.”

The patients that were involved in the study had their vitamin D levels measured within a year prior to getting a COVID-19 test.

According to the study, half of Americans are deficient in vitamin D, and even higher rates of deficiency are found in Black and LatinX Americans as well as areas like Chicago where sunlight is limited year-round.

“Understanding whether treating Vitamin D deficiency changes COVID-19 risk could be of great importance locally, nationally and globally,” Meltzer said.

According to researchers, shelter-in-place orders to reduce the spread of COVID-19 may also decrease sun exposure, and in turn, potentially increase the need for vitamin D supplementation which should not exceed 4000 IU per day.

Kitchen Renovation: For the Love of Lime Green!

I really like the color lime green -- or any shade of

 💚💚💚 green -- but in a kitchen?!!

What a colorful backsplash.  I have similar tiles in more muted tones on my bathroom wall.

I Designed a Lime Green Kitchen That I Love—But My Followers Hate

TikTok star Victoria Paris explains it all.

When I graduated from the New School and started doing TikTok full-time, I was living in a tiny flex room of an apartment, and it was just bursting at the seams. I looked for a new place for months, and then this random unit went on the market in New York’s Tribeca neighborhood with the worst pictures possible, like disgusting—but I had a really good feeling about it. And so I went and saw it, and realized how massive the space was and—most important—how it would be perfect for me and everything I planned to do.

I knew I wanted my apartment to look like iCarly—I just love the crazy maximalism of that show. When I was growing up, my parents always rented, and we were in between a lot of different houses, so we never fully moved into a space until I was 17 and found my parents the home they live in now. Growing up, I was really eclectic, and I dreamed of super lived-in spaces because I never had one. So with this place, I just wanted to make something my own, no matter if I lost the deposit.

Even though I loved the size of my new space, I hated the kitchen. I started thinking of things I could do to make it more me. The cabinets were made from a composite covered in a thick, rigid white plastic-wrap type of sealant. I knew I wanted to repaint them, but you can’t paint over that hard plastic. I did a bunch of research and found that if I took my Dyson hair dryer to the edges, the sealant started to pull up and I was able to rip it all off. Because the cabinets weren’t real wood, I had to get a special white paint sealer and repaint them with the green. The whole process took me around two weeks. Inspired by Colorful Kimmes, I also added a peel-and-stick backsplash that I got on Amazon (funnily enough, my TikTok about it got 2.2 million views and the stickers sold out, so now I can’t replace them) and floor decals to cover the gray tile floor.

You’re gonna freak out when I tell you, but the name of the Backdrop paint I used on the cabinets is Pretty Ugly. I was originally going for a Dakota Johnson–style shade, and at first I thought: Well, this is kind of bright. But you know what? It’s different. It’s cool. But everybody who follows me thought it was a joke. They were like, “You’re kidding me; this is disgusting. Who wants to look at this every day? What are you doing to this apartment? You’re ruining it.” So many people on Twitter and Reddit were angry about it. Out of all the things I’ve done online, the thing that really elicited the most reaction was these green cabinets. And I was like, “You guys don’t get the vision. It’s gonna all come together!”

Toy Jenga @ Mega Size Blocks

We gave this giant-version Jenga toy as a Welcome-to-America gift for the grandkids.

It was a hit.  They quickly became adept at figuring out which block is loose enough to remove -- even the 2-year-old 😯😁

What was the most fun?  Hearing the laughter and screams of the players as the lop-sided wood tower finally topples, LoL
 😂😁😀😂

Pride Event Canceled in Europe

Orthodox Christians march in Belgrade, Serbia
Pride Event Canceled as Europeans March in Defense of Christian Values: 'We Don't Give Up Holy Places'

These days, it is often considered tantamount to professing allegiance to Nazi ideology to openly oppose homosexuality as a matter of Christian conviction.

This vitriol towards basic Christian sexual ethics and cultural values has caused many a believer to cower apologetically or even downright support LGBT lifestyles to avoid being branded as “hateful.”

Even the most right-wing conservatives often pour their energy into defending their views and trying to make them more palatable to the secular left according to the left’s own values.

I’ve expended quite a lot of breath on this subject myself, but the truth is, it is far too easy to become overly concerned with the opinion of man while forgetting the exponentially more important fear of the Lord.

Truth be told, to conscience-bound Christians, it doesn’t matter what the world thinks of our loyalty to God — it only matters that we have loyalty to God, and boldly and shamelessly so.

So I believe we have something to admire in the thousands of Serbian Christians who protested against a massive LGBT “pride” event planned in their country — Christians who were not afraid to boldly declare that “we don’t give up holy places,” as one sign professed.

The protest was held in the Balkan country’s capital of Belgrade on Sunday and organized by opponents of a “Euro Pride” event that was scheduled to take place in the city in September.

Reuters reported that thousands turned up, led by members of the Serbian Orthodox Church, whose bishops are calling for the event to be banned.

The outlet noted that the day before, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic had said Euro Pride, which is held every year in a different European city, will be postponed or canceled.

Still adamant as to the threat to traditional values that the LGBT movement poses in their country, protesters carried signs saying “Keep your hands off our children” and “We don’t want a gay parade and occupation by the West,” according to Balkan Insight.

All “far-right” Serbian political parties have reportedly condemned Euro Pride, and the now-suspended event has been the subject of scathing remarks from Bishop Nikanor of Banat, who stated this month that the “pride” attendees would “flaunt and desecrate the city of Belgrade, the holy Serbian city.”

“I will curse all those who organize and participate in something like that,” he reportedly said, going as far as to declare, “If I had a weapon, I would use it. I would use that force if only I had it, but I do not.”

Now, something many Americans don’t understand is the cultural complexities of Eastern European loyalties and where they might lie after the tumultuous last two centuries.

And so we certainly don’t need to support everything these Serbians stand for — Reuters noted a marked presence of pro-Russia sentiment, for example, and we cannot wholeheartedly condone the outraged bishop’s desire to use a weapon to prevent the “pride” event from taking place.

What is not difficult to understand, however, whether you are discussing Serbia or other nations such as those in Africa and Latin America, is the sick and twisted ideological colonialism coming out of Western Europe and the U.S., imposing progressive, atheistic values upon traditional, Christian cultures.

The United Nations, the European Union and the government of the United States are often accused of attaching promises of aid to the aggressive advancement of progressive priorities like abortion and LGBT “rights.”

Serbia is currently a candidate to join the EU. Reuters reported that the country will have to “improve the rule of law and its human and minority rights record” to make the cut, so banning “pride” parades is likely out if it hopes to join the enlightened West in this regard.

Meanwhile, Western Christians have stood by, afraid of being termed hateful, old-world bigots for opposing LGBT ideology in our own “advanced” countries.

To many Europeans, defending their traditional values is a matter of defending centuries of heritage and tradition. But to the unified body of Christ across the globe, defending our right to boldly oppose objective immorality is a matter of defending the cross and our right to bow before it.

Christianity spread around the world across centuries and brought with it unprecedented advancements in education, human rights, and dignity for women and children.

As the fear of God has been systematically dismantled, so have these critical social advancements and the values of universal liberty that could have only originated in a profound regard for the Creator of mankind.

It is high time we stop being afraid of whom we’ll offend when we stand up for our values — it should concern us much more how many people don’t care about offending God.

So as you watch things like drag shows for children and shamelessly vulgar LGBT “pride” parades become the norm in the U.S., why not ask yourself, sincerely, who it is that you truly fear — God or man?

Black Front Door & Green Board and Batten Siding (Hardie)

A Black Front Door Isn’t the Only Exterior Update That Will Boost Your Home’s Value

by Domino Magazine

Turns out, painting your front door black and maintaining a pristine garden aren’t the only ways to increase your home’s worth from the outside. While these minor revamps are certainly appealing because they’re low-lift, recent intel from Zillow reveals that there are other facade upgrades that are worth the investment. According to the popular real-estate site, which analyzed more than 3 million home sales and listing descriptions from 2020 to 2021, houses with metal roofs, as well those constructed in a modern farmhouse or mid-century style, can sell for around 2 percent more than expected. However, one value-boosting exterior feature especially caught our attention: board-and-batten siding

Photography by Dionel Fisher; Design by KLH Custom Homes

The Zillow report suggests that properties with this design can potentially sell for 1.6 percent more than those without it. While the style sounds straightforward (it consists of wide vertical planks, or boards, that are joined together by thin vertical strips called battens), there’s more to it than cool-looking grooves. Liz Hoekzema of the Michigan-based design-build firm KLH Custom Homes says that board siding is customizable in so many ways, “the most obvious of which is color (it can be painted or repainted any shade under the sun), but also the spacing and thickness of battens, how you trim windows and doors, and whether you mix it up with different varieties.” Homeowners can choose from an array of materials (wood, vinyl, steel—the list goes on and on), but Hoekzema is a big fan of cement board (also known as Hardie board) siding.

In addition to being cost-effective and easy to install, the material has a strong fire-resistant rating, the designer points out. Overall, the style’s vertical orientation also allows it to shed water more effectively than homes with shake or lap siding. This way, your aesthetic preferences never infringe upon your personal safety. Whether you have a small or large home, Hoekzema notes that tight spacing makes for interesting textures, especially when contrasted with widely spaced battens (the KLH-designed house, pictured above, is a prime example). Plus she reveals that while it seems to lend itself to modern barn-inspired structures, it can also be used to achieve a more traditional design. In her words, this facade choice is “twofold” because it is visually appealing and functional (and not to forget, a pro for resale!). We’re convinced, to say the least.
