Old, But Not Yet Senile nor Sleepy

LoL!!

Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the much older lady that she should bring her own grocery bags, because plastic bags are not good for the environment,.
The woman apologized to the young girl and explained, "We didn't have this 'green thing' back in my earlier days."
The young clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations."

The older lady said that she was right our generation didn't have the "green thing" in its day. The older lady went on to explain: Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled.

But we didn't have the "green thing" back in our day. Grocery stores bagged our groceries in brown paper bags that we reused for numerous things. Most memorable besides household garbage bags was the use of brown paper bags as book covers for our school books. This was to ensure that public property (the books provided for our use by the school) was not defaced by our scribblings. Then we were able to personalize our books on the brown paper bags.

But, too bad we didn't do the "green thing" back then. We walked up stairs because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn't have the "green thing" in our day.

Back then we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the throw away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy-gobbling machine burning up 220 volts. Wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days.
Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right; we didn't have the "green thing" back in our day.

Back then we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana.

In the kitchen we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us.
When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap.

Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power.
We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right; we didn't have the "green thing" back then.

We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blade in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the "green thing" back then.

Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service in the family's $45,000 SUV or van, which cost what a whole house did before the "green thing."
We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 23,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest burger joint.

But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the "green thing" back then?

Please forward this on to another selfish old person who needs a lesson in conservation from a smart ass young person. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to piss us off... Especially from a tattooed, multiple pierced smart-ass who can't make change without the cash register telling them how much.

Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honour the face of the old man, and fear thy God: I am the LORD. (Leviticus 19:32 )

Potato or Potatoe??

Potatoes -- one of today's favorite foods -- were once considered poisonous "devil's apples."  Originally grown in the Peruvian Andes, papas were dismissed by the Spanish conquistadors as "primitive."  But when food became scarce and the conquerors were forced to eat them, their opinion changed.

Europeans initially balked at these "edible stones."  Farmers grew them, but only to feed their livestock.

Happy National Potato Day!

The potato's popularity began to rise after Frenchman Antoine Parmentier promoted their nutritional value, crediting the staple for his survival when he was imprisoned during the Seven Years' War.  The potato enthusiast made sure Benjamin Franklin had a helping at a banquet in Paris in 1767.  Impressed by their taste and versatility, the statesman spread the word back home and the potato effectively pushed turnips and rutabagas off the plate.

World Elephant Day 2020

I wonder if Elephants are secretly Republicans, LoL ...

World Elephant Day is an international annual event on August 12, dedicated to the preservation and protection of the world's elephants. Conceived in 2011 by Canadian filmmakers Patricia Sims and Michael Clark of Canazwest Pictures, and Sivaporn Dardarananda, Secretary-General of the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation in Thailand, it was officially founded, supported and launched by Patricia Sims and the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation on August 12, 2012 ... The goal of International Elephant Day is to create awareness of the urgent plight  of African and Asian elephants, and to share knowledge and positive solutions for the better care and management of captive and wild elephants. -- wikipedia

Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female.
Of fowls also of the air by sevens, the male and the female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth.
For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth. - - Genesis 7

Keeping Your Cool During the Heat of Summer With No Air Conditioner

Winter will be here soon!

I grew up in a tropical, Asian country.  I survived the oppressive heat by dressing appropriately and lots of activity/swimming by the Rivers and Streams nearby. Eating lots of fresh fruit quenched my thirst. Being young and in excellent health also played a big role.

Currently melting away from the intense heat coz of no A/C. I'm seriously thinking about dumping buckets of ice in the tub and soaking in it.❄️ Is it hot where you're at today? My mood is SO cranky from the heat! I got curious and did some research. Here's a few fun facts about heat affecting your mood:

🔥 Heat triggers feelings of agitation
🔥 High humidity can lower concentration
🔥 All of this leads to poor sleep and decreased energy which then makes you more cranky and depressed.

So what can you do to beat the heat besides cranking up the A/C? Take a cue from the ancient Greeks and Japanese Shinto monks by taking a COLD shower. There are so many great benefits like

❄️ increased alertness
❄️refined skin and hair
❄️ease stress and anxiety
❄️ improves circulation
❄️ adds happy endorphins!

So don't mind me while I head to the shower and soak in cool hydrotherapy to get my mood back on track! Stay cool my friends🌬️

GOYA Foods: My Support

Doing my part to support GOYA Foods

It's not much, but it's a start. I am also tweaking the Paella recipe as I had never cooked it in the past.

I suddenly had the urge to become a fan when a few prominent Liberals and public figures supported a boycott of Goya's products on social media over its CEO Robert Unanue's praise of President Trump.  Nothing attracts me more to the side of the poor underdog than unreasonable Liberal hatred towards it based on nothing more than hurt feelings.
