A Cat Called Room 8

In honor of National Kitten Day (July 10, 2022) here is one unforgettable kitten/cat 🐈 named Room 8: 

“Room 8” ( 1947–1968 )

Room 8 was a neighborhood cat who wandered into a classroom in 1952 at Elysian Heights Elementary School in Echo Park, California. He lived in the school during the school year and then disappeared for the summer, returning when classes started again. This pattern continued without interruption until the mid-1960s.

News cameras would arrive at the school at the beginning of the year waiting for the cat's return; he became famous and would receive up to 100 letters a day addressed to him at the school. Eventually, he was featured in a documentary called Big Cat, Little Cat, and a children's book, A Cat Called Room 8. Look magazine ran a three-page Room 8 feature by photographer Richard Hewett in November 1962, titled "Room 8: The School Cat". Leo Kottke wrote an instrumental called "Room 8" that was included in his 1971 album, Mudlark.

As he got older, Room 8 was injured in a cat fight and suffered from feline pneumonia, so a family near the school volunteered to take him in. The school's janitor would find him at the end of the school day and carry him across the street.

His obituary in the Los Angeles Times rivaled that of major political figures, running three columns with a photograph. The cat was so famous that his obituary ran in papers as far away as Hartford, Connecticut. The students raised the funds for his gravestone. He is buried at the Los Angeles Pet Memorial Park in Calabasas, California.

Life With Pets: Vicious Kitty

Peace. Out.
Each Pet usually gets along with the other, but for two nights in a row I was roused from sleep by  hissing and/or door banging. What gives?  I was too sleepy to care, and let it go.Tufts of hair greeted me in the morning. Cats were calm or napping at their fave spots. The rest of the Family had nothing to report. No signs of damage that I could see. All. Is. Well.

We call her The Lawnmower -- very aggressive and greedy when it comes time for snacks. 

She must have thought she had grabbed the mother-load when her claws snagged my hand while I was doling-out cat snacks, 👎😑. BTW, as little as the claw puncture looks, it stung 😒

Black Cats are Still the Best Pets

I have personally been owned by 2 black cats; each has left an indelible mark in my heart.

This post got me teary-eyed rather quickly even when I re-read it the following day. Here's to you Chloe (and Midnight, and Kuning)!!

21 years ago a single young Jessica went to the pound with the intention of finding a fluffy white kitten. I came home with this little sweet cat, Chloe, who at the time was two. She had been brought to the pound with her two kittens who were quickly adopted. She waited there for a YEAR despite having the best personality ever - apparently black cats are not popular adoption animals. This little creature was in my life before I met my husband Yianni. Penelope and Max, our 14 and 16 year old kids, have never known life without her. She died as she lived, with sweet and gentle grace and dignity, surrounded by affection.

Things about Chloe:

She loved people and parties and was the most sociable, gracious and welcoming hostess - always making sure to greet everyone and spend a little time with each friend. Male guests were especially welcome...she may have been a tiny bit of a flirt. :) 💋

She loved to follow us along for walks.
.
In her prime she was an excellent mouser and not one to waste food she would eat the entire mouse, head to tail, like a candy bar, not leaving a morsel behind.

Unlike many cats she was more people based than place based, and enjoyed car rides and family outings.

She lived in France for a year and loved the French countryside. The happiest and craziest we’ve ever seen her was at my great-grandmother’s house in Burgundy where she would get out of the car when we arrived and immediately do a crazed happy dance running from tree to tree, up to the tops and back down again.

She lived in Tiny House with us, sharing our sweet little 540 square feet for four years. 🏡 .

The last several years she sat with us at dinner every night, on the bench, happily accepting a little bite of meat but also just there for the company if the meal was vegetarian.

She lived to 23 - 108 in people years. 👵🏽 .
In general, she had a gentle, sociable, sweet, loving, funny, calm, personable, adorable disposition. Our hearts are filled with sadness and love. Lots of lessons to be learned from this dear little one. ♥  --- JHID

My Household Increase in Cat & Dog Population

I have asked the Lord God, in the name of Christ, to "enlarge my coast" a-la Jabez of old, but now am uncertain if I was specific enough.  Instead of grandchildren, there has been an increase in the Pet animal population of our extended family via our son and daughters. Maybe I need to re-phrase my prayer, LoL ??

I am proud of the fact that my children are kind to Animals.  That will surely translate to being kind to others, Lord willing.

She loves dragging dirty laundry all over the house. Embarrassing! Feels like walking around with your zipper un-zipped or with ripped-up pants that expose your privates.
