Dental X Ray Requirements in your State

Just as I thought.  There is nothing written in stone about Dental X-ray requirements by my state.

Dental X-ray Laws
X-rays are often a part of dental exams, and while there is no statutory direction as to how often a dentist must take X-rays, there is a general liability issue.

Dentists should take X-rays in a "reasonable" time span to justify that he or she didn't disregard patients' oral health care. A dentist isn't legally required to take X-rays every six months or every year, particularly in patients who generally enjoy good oral health. However, if the dentist doesn't take X-rays and something happens, then he or she will be judged by the standards of the profession which indicate that it is proper to use X-rays for diagnostic purposes; it is difficult to do a thorough diagnosis without taking X-rays at reasonable intervals throughout the patient's "lifetime" at the dental office.
While dental patients have the right to refuse X-rays, the dentists also have the right to set a policy in their office dictating how often they take them for diagnostic purposes. X-rays provide your dentist with a valuable diagnostic tool that helps assess the overall condition of your teeth and their roots, jaw placement and overall composition of your facial bones. X-rays help your dentist see diseases of the teeth and surrounding tissue that cannot be seen with a basic visual oral examination and find and treat dental problems early in their development. This can potentially save you money, unnecessary discomfort and maybe even your life.

If the dentist has a policy that X-rays are to be taken at a given interval, and the patient refuses, the dentist has the right (although he or she may choose not exercise it) to dismiss the patient from his or her practice. The reason for this is that both the patient and dentist should be comfortable with the dentist/patient relationship and, should there be disagreement on fundamental treatment, then both parties would be better served in an environment where they both are comfortable.

I took exception to my Dentist's requirement that I have a full-mouth, panoramic dental x-ray ... which in reality is 17 X-rays of my teeth. It's been a couple of years, says he.  As far as I knew, my teeth and gums were fine.  I had no cavities, toothaches nor open sores. So, why not do the simple, twice-yearly dental cleaning without me having to compromise my health via radiation, for pete's sake?!! Office overhead $$$ getting a bit too much for you, Mr Dentist-with-the-expensive-indoor-waterfall?!!

Still, I am grateful to live in this beautiful, clean country of the U.S. of A! Watch the dental video below from India.  It'll make you either wince, gag, cry, laugh. Maybe all 4.

Pet Health: Doggy Dental Visit

Janey 'tzu was not amused. No morning walk. No breakfast. In fact, no water and no food since midnight.  All to please the doggy Dentist!*

Bubbles remained the perfect dog. She goes to the car with no fuss, no complaints, no whining. She's calm but you can tell she knew that something was up.

They were both dropped off at the Veterinarian's office by 9 a.m.  Blood-work was ordered for senior-dog Bubbles (she's 10+ y.o.) before she goes under anesthesia.  Both were scheduled for general mouth exam, teeth cleaning, and simple extractions. Anything out of the ordinary will be brought to our attention.  We pray; and wait at home nervously.

The 11:00 am call comes with the following report:  No extractions needed for either. No problems that needed further attention. Yay!  The barely once-a-month teeth brushing must have been sufficient, haha.

Vet refers to Janey as a "beast". It took 2 doses of anesthesia to completely knock her out. Her liver was obviously on top of things and functioning very well. Her stubborn personality probably played a part too.  Surprise, surprise -- she is missing 7 teeth!! What? How?

could these bones be the culprit?

Bubbles continued with her calm and cooperative demeanour even while with strangers. She was only missing 1 tooth, and enjoying her drugs while resting in her crate. ZZzzzzzzzzzzzz.  Both come home with antibiotic prescriptions.

How often are our dogs to visit the Dentist?  Only on an as-needed basis: bad breath, injury, pain, not eating. Great!  Glad to get this initial visit out of the way.

Janes is missing teeth #103, 105, 201, 203, 207, 305 and 307

*It took 6 months from my dental appointment email request with the  Dog Dentist to the day of the actual dental exam.  The place is a popular destination for on-a-tight-budget pet parents.

Dental Health: Artisanal Toothpaste

I spend 2-3x a day brushing my teeth. Why not get the best product I can afford since, supposedly, the number one source of disease is the mouth?

So, high-quality,good-for-me toothpaste here I come.

My first purchase.  I chose Schmidt's   tooth+mouth paste for the variety of flavours plus it was affordable (need to wean myself of on-sale toothpaste from Walgreens).  Set of 5 for $25.99 + s/h.  Otherwise, $5.99 each.  My next order with Schmidt's earned me a free shipping code.

Per Schmidt's website:

INGREDIENTS FIRST

We prioritize ingredients that are derived from nature. When developing our formulas, we look to innovative botanicals and mineral-derived ingredients that are packed with healthy benefits for our bodies. Everything we produce is manufactured without harming any animals, and we never purchase ingredients from suppliers that test their products on animals — Schmidt’s is committed to staying certified vegan and cruelty-free. Schmidt’s Naturals products are always free of aluminum, propylene glycol, SLS, PEG, parabens, phthalates, artificial fragrance, artificial flavor, artificial colorants, and artificial sweeteners.

looks good!
First up: Wintermint with Activated Charcoal.  Paste not as black as son wanted it to be. Kind of reminds me of bird doodoo, lol.  Refreshing mint taste comes thru.

Schmidt's description:
  • Activated Charcoal, flavored with Wondermint: Enticingly cool, fresh mint, without the bitter aftertaste. A fresh and wondrous take on classic minty flavors.
  • Appealing onyx grey toothpaste color from the addition of charcoal. Not a dark black paste.
  • Helps freshen breath and whiten teeth with regular brushing.
  • With CoQ10, goji and pomegranate extracts, organic aloe leaf juice, magnolia bark extract, and vitamin E.
  • Encourages mouth health, helping combat plaque and tartar with regular brushing.
  • Free of SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate), SCS (Sodium Coco-Sulfate), PEG (Polyethylene Glycol), artificial sweeteners and dyes.

After we go through these Schmidt's products, I'd like to buy this very expensive toothpaste ... to match one of my favourite fragrances, hahaha.
pc: Anthropologie
 Lebon toothpaste
Not only is it free of chemicals and toxic ingredients, but it’s also handmade in the same factory as Chanel No. 5. It's the creme de la creme of French toothpaste. And boy has it elevated my teeth game. Not only do my teeth feel clean, they feel French and fancy—très chic. (K Limoges, Domino Magazine)

Dentist Office: Indoor Waterfall

I like waiting at my Dentists' waiting room, especially if I am doing just that -- waiting for someone else who is several doors away (where I can not hear her), getting her rotten teeth filled with the help of multiple Novocaine shots to deaden the pain.
So, I wait and wait; and sit on a nice leather chair in a tastefully decorated room. There is free coffee from a Keurig, and a playroom for young children.  I can watch cable TV from multiple screens or read the latest magazines. The indoor waterfall trickling down the floor-to-ceiling glass wall provides a soothing background sound. However, I am aware that since the Dentists' move to this - their new luxurious pad - my family has had to have more appointments than ever. Coincidence, or part of a well thought-out plan on their part?  How much of this luxury is funded, indirectly or directly, out of my own pocket??
