USA: The Cost in Dollars for Each Illegal Immigrant

 Is this fair to a  responsible, hard-working US citizen; or to a Legal Immigrant??!!! 

The swelling population of illegal immigrants and their kids is costing American taxpayers $135 billion a year, the highest ever, driven by free medical care, education and a huge law enforcement bill, according to the most authoritative report on the issue yet.

And despite claims from pro-illegal immigration advocates that the aliens pay significant off-setting taxes back to federal, state and local treasuries, the Federation for American Immigration Reform   (FAIR  )  report tallied just $19 billion, making the final hit to taxpayers about $116 billion.

State and local governments are getting ravaged by the costs, at over $88 billion. The federal government, by comparison, is getting off easy at $45 billion in costs for illegals.

President Trump, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and conservatives in Congress are moving aggressively to deal with illegals, especially those with long criminal records. But their effort is being fought by courts and some 300 so-called "sanctuary communities" that refuse to work with federal law enforcement.

The added burden on taxpayers and the unfairness to those who have applied to come into the United States through legal channels is also driving the administration's immigration crackdown.

The report, titled "The Fiscal Burden of Illegal Immigration" on U.S. Taxpayers is the most comprehensive cost tally from FAIR. It said that the costs have jumped about $3 billion in four years and will continue to surge unless illegal immigration is stopped. It was provided in advance exclusively to Secrets.

"Clearly, the cost of doing nothing to stop illegal immigration is far too high," said FAIR Executive Director Dan Stein. "President Trump has laid out a comprehensive strategy to regain control of illegal immigration and bring down these costs," said Stein. "Building the wall, enhancing interior enforcement and mandating national E-Verify will go a long way in bringing these ridiculously high costs under control," he added.

Over 68 often shocking pages, FAIR documents the average $8,075 in state, local and federal spending for each of the of 12.5 million illegal immigrants and their 4.2 million citizen children.

Broadly, the costs include $29 billion in medical care, $23 billion for law enforcement, $9 billion in welfare, $46 billion for education.

Just consider the cost of teaching an illegal alien child who doesn't speak English. FAIR estimates an average cost of over $12,000 a year, and that can reach $25,000 in New York. Add to that welfare, health care, school lunches, and the per-student price soars.

In state costs alone, California leads the list at $23 billion per year, followed by Texas at $11 billion, and New York at $7.4 billion.

And it also documents the taxes paid and how they don't come close to offsetting the costs. What's more, FAIR noted that 35 percent of the illegal population operate in an underground economy hidden from tax collectors. And worse, employers hire illegals and either pay them cheaply or under the table.

"The United States recoups only about 14 percent of the amount expended annually on illegal aliens. If the same jobs held by illegal aliens were filled by legal workers, at the prevailing market wage, it may safely be presumed that federal, state and local governments would receive higher tax payments," said FAIR.

Key findings pulled from the report:

• The staggering total costs of illegal immigrants and their children outweigh the taxes paid to federal and state governments by a ratio of roughly 7 to 1, with costs at nearly $135 billion compared to tax revenues at nearly $19 billion.
• The nearly $135 billion paid out by federal and state and local taxpayers to cover the cost of the presence of 12.5 million illegal aliens and their 4.2 million citizen children amounts to approximately $8,075 per illegal alien and citizen child prior to taxes paid, or $6,940 per person after taxes are paid.
• On the federal level, medical ($17.14 billion) is by far the highest cost, with law enforcement coming second ($13.15 billion) and general government services ($8 billion) third.
• At the state and local level, education ($44.4 billion) was by far the largest expense, followed by general public services ($18.5 billion) and medical ($12.1 billion).
• The top three states based on total cost to state taxpayers for illegal immigrants and their children: California ($23 billion); Texas ($10.9 billion), and New York ($7.5 billion).

I want a RAISE

The Cotton-Perdue RAISE Act is a refreshing effort to help American workers by Robert Law

"Senators introduce bill that helps American workers." No, this isn’t a title from an article in "The Onion" but instead the most succinct statement to describe the work being done by Sens. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and David Perdue (R-Ga.). With great fanfare, President Trump and the two senators released a revised version of the “Reforming American Immigration for Strong Economy” (RAISE) Act, a commonsense bill that actually recognizes the American people as the primary stakeholders in our immigration system.

Since 1965, U.S. immigration policy has prioritized nepotism—extended family relationships—over skills. As a result of our chain migration policies, the U.S. hands out over 1.1 million new green cards a year with approximately two-thirds going to immigrants who happen to have a family member in the country, regardless of that immigrant’s ability to assimilate and contribute to the economy. For some perspective, that is the equivalent of adding the entire population of Montana every year. Just one out of every 15 new immigrants are awarded green cards because of their skills.

The results are unsurprising. Decades of flooding the labor force with low-skilled workers has caused blue collar wages to flat-line or decrease. In many cases, most notably construction, new low-skilled immigrants have replaced blue collar Americans, especially native born minority males. A few years ago, the nonpartisan Center for Immigration Studies found that an astounding 51 percent of immigrant-headed households (legal and illegal) rely on at least one federal taxpayer-funded welfare program, compared to 30 percent of native households.

For more than 50 years, our immigration system has worked without much logic. Cotton and Perdue's would now make it points-based. The RAISE Act scraps our current employment-based green card framework and replaces it with a skills-based points system. Nations like Australia and Canada already do this; it’s about time the U.S. followed suit. This merit-based system would award points based on education, English proficiency, job skills, age (meaning prime working age), and entrepreneurial investment—factors that prioritize those best able to succeed and contribute to the American economy.

If we can better select immigrants who are going to succeed in the U.S., we’ve not only helped them better themselves but have also bettered our nation as well.

The RAISE Act would also unshackle the chain migration approach that has operated as codified nepotism. A key component of this bill is limiting family-based green cards to the nuclear family, meaning spouses and minor children. If the siblings or adult children of a citizen want to come to the U.S., they are now going to have to earn their way in. Sensibly, the bill does allow U.S. citizens to bring in their non-citizen elderly parents for caretaking purposes, but they cannot access taxpayer funded services.

The bill has two other important provisions to restore integrity to our immigration system. First, it ends the visa lottery where the U.S. randomly hands out 55,000 green cards a year by arbitrarily pulling names out of a hat. Additionally, it sets an annual cap on refugee admissions at 50,000, consistent with a 13-year average. Combined, the RAISE Act is expected to reduce overall legal immigration to around 550,000 per year within a decade—a 50 percent reduction compared to current levels.

While Cotton and Perdue should be applauded for their work, the core of the RAISE Act is not a new idea. In fact, more than twenty years ago, President Clinton created a bipartisan commission to review every aspect of U.S. immigration policy. Led by late civil rights leader and Texas Rep. Barbara Jordan, the commission in 1996 recommended an end to chain migration, prioritizing immigrant admissions based on skills, and limiting overall immigration to 550,000 per year. Sound familiar? Clinton and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle fully endorsed the Jordan Commission’s recommendations.

Naturally, because this is Washington, those recommendations were never implemented. Now, after more than 20 years of maintaining the status quo, Sens. Cotton and Perdue want to finally raise the standards of U.S. green card policy. President Trump is on board and the American people widely support it, so will Congress finally rise to the occasion and pass legislation that serves the national interest?

I am a Child of Immigrants

While a mere wisp of a child and living in a 3rd world country in SE Asia, my R N  Mama and Civil Engineer Papa sought greener pastures elsewhere. Mom and Dad were hard workers, could speak fluent English, had their college degrees, and knew a few relatives and acquaintances abroad. That's it.  Oh, they also had RAW. SHEER. COURAGE. 

Which country to choose? The travel agent had cajoled them to move to Canada. It's quick, and relatively "easy" said she. I am certain they could have also chosen Japan, Australia, England, South America, and so on.  But no, it was USA/America or bust!

And no wonder. The USA was a very popular choice for many. Safety was never going to be an issue in a country known for its stability. Jobs were plentiful. Success was not unheard of. My parents must have also liked the list of rights afforded to all LEGAL immigrants (emphasis mine):

• Live permanently in the United States provided you do not commit any actions that would make you removable under immigration law

 After filling-out a mountain of paperwork, passing the physical exam and fulfilling all requirements set by the immigration laws of the USA, we were given our green cards  (status: Legal Resident).  Five years after moving here,  our family of 5 proudly chose to become  US Citizens. Through the years and up to today, we have had no reason nor desire to ever permanently leave this country. By the grace of God, we have been blessed beyond measure.It was worth the wait and all difficulties.  My parents made an excellent choice. The R Family loves you, America.  Happy, Happy Birthday on this 4th of July!

Pakistani Christians in Thailand

These Christians are between a rock and a hard place.   They travel to Thailand on a  temporary Tourist Visa to escape death, war or violent threats.  They tend to overstay while in Thailand as it takes a very long time for the UN to process a move  to another country  as a Refugee.  Thailand's legal system does not recognize the Refugee status when they do overstay. Next up -- Prison? Detention Center? Months or years of hide-and-seek?

What to do, what to do?!  Other than praying for the Lord's continued provision, care; and the speeding-up of the Refugee process, here is a way that you can help.

For Visual Learners: Immigration in Gumballs

Allowing more immigrants into the USA  barely makes a dent and does not get to the root of the misery.  Since hunger is a great motivator for various things illegal, I was thinking that  generous donations; & increased food production with accessibility (teach a man to fish ...) where the desperate masses live would help immensely.  Regarding donations: hubby reminded me of a basic problem in our 3rd world country and in many others:  greed/theft. Many hands got to the till.  As youngsters we were occasionally direct recipients of the US' generosity. I was grateful, but knew that the quantity was a  trickle by the time it got to my sack. Government workers, politicians, dock workers, teachers, nuns, et al, also had their cut of the bounty.
