Bathroom Renovation: Keep the Bath Tub!

Why Keeping Your Bathtub Will Increase Your Home's Value
(by House Beautiful)
Reports say that a third of those renovating are removing their tubs. Here’s the strong case for keeping them.

One thing everyone agrees on: A bathroom renovation is a smart investment. But as homeowners aim for more space, bathtubs are getting washed down the drain. According to a 2018 Houzz study, nearly 34 percent of boomers are nixing their tubs—and replacing them with massive walk-in showers.

I ❤ You, Isaiah!

Bad idea, say real-estate experts. “I’m now recommending bathtubs to my clients,” says Douglas Elliman broker John Gomes. “We’re making master bedrooms smaller to create larger bathrooms.” The reason is twofold: Bathtubs are great for families—at the end of the day, few kids take showers. And secondly, they facilitate the ultimate method of self-care. “People are starting to realize the immense benefits to pampering ourselves,” says designer Matthew Quinn. “It’s a luxury to be able to soak and recharge at the end of a long week.”

The Best Bathroom Wastebasket

Luv it! 💚💛💜
Never thought a new, simple, wooden trashcan could make me so happy and content 😁

What's there not to like -- lidded, cute, handwoven, petite, lineable, unique?! My pets 🐾 cannot access the contents. Cover will keep waste items discreet and odors dampened.  The container sits regally on its "feet".  Wood-tone/rattan matches and complements our bathroom decor. Yay!

Get it soon. The wait time is longer, and the price for each has gone up by $30 since my purchase a couple of months ago

Toilet Paper TP Shortage Yet Again??!

If I had been wise and installed add-on or stand-alone bidets during our recent bathroom renovation, I would pay no heed to these rumors.  Anyhoo, I took this recent news seriously and ordered not only more TP, but paper towels as well. I also ordered more TP for the church since we had volunteered to be in charge of bathroom supplies

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The great toilet paper shortage of 2020 is threatening an encore.

Brazilian company Suzano SA, the world's largest producer of wood pulp, warns of supply issues in the weeks ahead because of the giant cargo container ship blocking traffic in Egypt's Suez Canal -- a critical global trade route, Bloomberg reports.

Wood pulp is the raw material used for various paper products, including toilet tissue...

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7 )

Bathroom Renovation: Stunning Light Fixtures I Love

Since installing a cool Astra light fixture in our very own master bathroom during renovation, I've looked for similar light fixtures. So cute! Colorful/unusual ones also draw my eye.

Bathroom Renovation: Small Bathroom Ideas

This subject of small bathrooms is always a subject of interest to me. Near and dear to my heart, for certain.

One of our very own bathrooms is only 55 square feet (11 by 5 feet) in square footage total. Long and rectangular.  It's only source of natural light is a skylight (very thankful for it). What to do to give it a WoW factor since its the main bathroom for Guests??

Below are examples of other renovated, small but cute bathrooms.

6 Small Bathrooms With Dramatic Walk-In Showers.  In 65 square feet or less, these designers make big design statements using stylish tile and bold contrast (by HOUZZ.com)

1. Large Black Tile in Herringbone Pattern With White Grout
Designer: Brooke Brown of L&B
Location: Houston
Size: 50 square feet (4.6 square meters); 5 by 10 feet

Homeowners’ request. “The homeowner wanted this main floor bathroom to wow her guests the moment they walked in,” designer Brooke Brown says. “The brass fixtures soften and warm up the sharp black-and-white contrast, which creates a timeless yet modern space.”

2. Small Marble Tile in Herringbone Pattern
Designers: Liz Diseati (project manager) and VW Fowlkes (principal designer) of Fowlkes Studio
Location: New York City
Size: 50 square feet (4.6 square meters); 5 by 10 feet

Homeowners’ request. A midcentury modern bathroom with a double vanity and a large shower. “The original layout had a small closet that was not very functional. We took over the closet space with the new layout to increase the size of the bathroom and allow room for a double vanity and a more generous shower,” designer VW Fowlkes says.

3. Handmade Tile That Looks Like Tree Bark
Designer: Danielle Loven of Vivid Interior
Location: Eden Prairie, Minnesota
Size: 40 square feet (3.7 square meters); 5 by 8 feet

Homeowners’ request. Remove a bathtub and add a walk-in shower that would feature rustic textured tile that nods to the home’s wooded surrounding.

4. Marble Basket-Weave Tile

Designer: Laura Fox
Location: McLean, Virginia
Size: 65 square feet (6 square meters); 5 by 13 feet

Homeowners’ request. Update a 1960s-era bathroom and its baby-blue tile, toilet and bathtub to create a brighter, more luxurious and elegant design with more storage.

5. Black Hexagonal Floor Tile
Designer: Michele McIntyre
Location: Newport Beach, California
Size: 60 square feet (5.6 square meters)

Homeowners’ request. “This was new construction for an investor client, so I had complete creative freedom,” designer Michele McIntyre says. “However, it’s a guest bath visible from a walk to the powder room for all guests in the home, so I chose easy-on-the-eye yet interesting details.”

6. Black Marble Tile

Designers: Morgan and Jamie Molitor of construction2style
Location: Elk River, Minnesota
Size: 42 square feet (3.9 square meters)

Homeowners’ request. Update a guest bathroom and free up space by removing the tub and large vanity and installing a walk-in shower and floating vanity.

Home Renovation: Saving Money on Your Backsplash

In spite of Covid-19, Home Renovation season is moving forward!  It can be a major expense, so it's a good idea to look for wise ways to save money $$.  Here is a helpful article from Domino Magazine ( written by L. Geisel) on saving money on your choice of backsplash.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from veteran renovators, it’s that less is almost always more. Even small adjustments can make a big improvement. For instance, consider the backsplash, a critical (but surprisingly expensive) part of any kitchen remodel. It’s also a small way to save a lot of cash. What’s the difference between a low-cost kitchen job and a super-expensive one? Ten inches, give or take.
While the standard height is usually in the 15- to 20-inch range, if you’re on a budget, the magic number is 6. When designer Jaclyn Peters was reimagining avid baker Ashley Illchuck’s space, she had good reason to scale down: Illchuck wanted to splurge on soapstone counters. The soft, stain-resistant material is roughly $150 per square foot, so to continue it up the walls would have cost nearly $3,000—not including install. Instead, Peters only continued the backsplash up the wall for 6 inches (or whatever it was)—a small change that made a big impact, and not just on her budget. Here, three more reasons kitchen renovators swear by this work-around.
