U.S. Veterans Among Us; Navy Song -- Eternal Father Strong to Save

Happy Veterans Day!
A sincere Thank You!  to all who have served, or are currently serving this great country through any of the branches of the  U.S. Armed Forces

Left to Right: Dale, U.S. Navy; Reno, U.S. Army;
  Freadom, U.S. Army; Frank, U.S. Coast Guard

I was told by Dale that the hymn below (specifically, the first stanza) is an official U.S. Navy song.  However, we both agree that the lyrics make it applicable to any branches of the U.S. Military.

Eternal Father, Strong to Save

Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm hath bound the restless Wave,
Who bids the mighty ocean deep. Its own appointed limits keep:
O hear us when we cry to Thee. For those in peril on the sea.

O Christ, the Lord of hill and plain. O'er which our traffic runs amain
By mountain pass or valley low: Wherever, Lord, our brethren go,
Protect them by Thy guarding hand. From every peril on the land.

O Spirit, whom the Father sent. To spread abroad the firmament:
O Wind of heaven, by Thy might Save all who dare the eagle's flight,
And keep them by Thy watchful care. From every peril in the air.

O Trinity of love and power, Our brethren shield in danger's hour;
From rock and tempest, fire and foe. Protect them wheresoe'er they go;'
Thus evermore shall rise to Thee. Glad praise from air and land and sea.

USS New York --- made from the World Trade Center!!

The USS New York  was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center.  As you scroll down, notice the twin towers on top.

Artist's rendition below

(article copied and pasted from an email, and Associated Press)

It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.

Later, ships in the class will include  USS Arlington, the location of the Pentagon also struck by a hijacked plane on September 11, and USS Somerset, named for the Pennsylvania county where United Flight 93 crashed afer its passengers fought off hijackers apparently planning to attack another Washington target.

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, LA to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept 9, 2003 , 'those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence,' recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there.

'It was a spiritual moment for everybody there.'

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the 'hair on my neck stood up.' 'It had a big meaning to it for all of us,' he said. 'They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back.'

The ship's motto? 'Never Forget'
